by Myra Chavez, JPIA President
Mr. Joey Velasco signing poster copies of his artworks The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) of St. Scholastica’s College, together with the Youth for Christ (YFC), organized a talk with Mr. Joey Velasco, a well-known Filipino painter and sculptor as resource person. The event, which was held last January 21, 2008, was one of the highlights of the celebration of the JPIA Organization Week. The one-day activity started with the inspirational talk of Mr. Velasco as he narrated his various experiences and the rationale for creating his masterpieces, which included the famous paintings Hapag ng Pag-asa and Kalakbay. Joey’s portraits are eye-openers. The models of his paintings are the street children, the poor, the aged, and the outcasts of the society with Jesus in their midst. When viewing his paintings, one might ask “why” these young people live in such an inhuman and violent society. As a Christian community, the challenge now is how we can possibly help them out of such misery. During his talk, Mr. Velasco also showed a 20-minute documentary film narrating the life and story of the children included in his work Hapag. The short film was a reality check and at the same time an affirmation that within a community of believers there is no room for poverty that denies anyone to live a dignified life. Mr. Joey Velasco’s works and paintings were exhibited at the Amrhein Gallery from January 21-25, 2008. PHOTO GALLERY:
